1 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar, scant
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
3/4 cup cornmeal
1 egg
1 cup buttermilk or sour milk
2 tbsp. shortening
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix and sift flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add cornmeal.
Beat eggs and milk then add to flour mixture.
Bake in 8 inch square pan, greased with shortening for 20-30 minutes.
